International Accreditation New Zealand

Industry depends on reliable inspection, measurement, testing and other technical professional services to facilitate trade.  Accurate results are essential for protection public health and safety and protecting the environment.

Accreditation of technical professional services by international Accreditations New Zealand provides evidence of reliability and competence. Established under the Testing Laboratory Registration Act, 1972, International Accreditation New Zealand is a not-for-profit government agency funded from client fees.  It is the national authority for the accreditation of  testing and calibration laboratories, radiology services, inspection bodies, pharmacies and other technical professional services.

More than five hundred organisations are accredited in New Zealand. Each one is instantly recognised by the distinctive International Accreditation New Zealand logo on their reports and certificates.

Recognising technical competency and management effectiveness “Accreditation” means formal recognition by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) of an organisation’s technical competence and effective quality management.  IANZ formally recognises New Zealand organisations that are technically competent and have implemented quality management systems that comply with international standards.  Accredited organisations are registered under the provisional’s of the Testing Laboratory Registration Act, 1972.

They include:

  • Testing and calibration laboratories
  • Pharmacies
  • Radiology services
  • Inspection Services

These organisations are accredited to issue specific test, inspection of technical service reports or certificates and to deliver technical services.  Their areas of competency are specified in their Scopes of Accreditation.  For example, a laboratory may be accredited to undertake specific chemical tests but not to test electrical products for safety.

IANZ operates according to standards set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). Accreditation is achieved after IANZ has assessed the organisation for:

  • The competence and experience of it’s staff
  • The integrity and traceability of its equipment and materials.
  •  The technical validity of its methods
  • Compliance with the relevant ISO management system standard

IANZ works with professional experts during the assessment.
